NMR-Spectroscopic Investigations of Porphyrins with Nanoparticles as Carrier Systems

(M. Hädener, J. Furrer, M. Vermathen)

Porphyrins are studied as sensitizers in Photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer and other non-cancerous diseases. Porphyrinic photosensitizers accumulate in diseased tissue and become cytotoxic through singlet oxygen formation via energy transfer when irradiated by light (“phototoxic”). Therefore, PDT is a highly selective promising alternative to conventional cancer therapy. However, many porphyrinic photosensitizers of interest exhibit a high tendency for self-association. Nano-sized carrier systems (nanoparticles) have therefore become a focus of current research in this field. The goal of this project is to characterize selected porphyrins embedded into biodegradable block-copolymer micelles utilizing NMR spectroscopy as main tool.
